The Knights Templar of England and Wales have raised a staggering £1500 for the charity Mind (Conwy) by holding a charity golf tournament.
The event took place at Abergele Golf Club on Friday 28th June 2024 and saw golfers from the local area enjoy a full round of 18 holes whilst raising money for mental health charity Mind (Conwy).
Abergele Golf Club donated use of the club to the event and local businesses sponsored each hole, which has allowed the event to beat its initial target of £1000 raising a phenomenal £1500 so far.
Mind (Conwy) is the mental health charity in North Wales covering the counties of Conwy, Anglesey, and Gwynedd.
John Bird, Grand Prior of the Knights Templar of England & Wales, said: “One of the key aims of the event is to raise awareness for this very important charity.
“I hadn’t heard of Mind until very recently and so I suspected others won’t have either. If we can help to raise their profile even just a little bit then the event will have been a success. The fact we’ve also managed to pull together £1500 is the cherry on the cake.
“Abergele Golf Club have been so kind in donating use of the course also giving us space in their very busy reception area where we can display information about Mind (Conwy).”
The Knights Templar of England & Wales take their name from the medieval Knights Templar who vowed to protect pilgrims travelling to and from the Holy Land.
The original Order of warrior monks were active for just under 200-years from 1119 until 1312.
Deputy Chancellor of the Knights Templar of England & Wales, Russel Erwood, jokes: “The days of going on crusades are very much behind us.
“Modern Templars choose instead to assist their communities in many different ways. Today, under the guidance of our Grand Prior, we held a golf tournament in aid of Mind (Conwy). As well as raising money and awareness for registered charities we also do things like organise opportunities for underprivileged children to see Father Christmas, we’ll litter pick in our local area, and we sponsor the training of assistance dogs for the blind and deaf.
“What I love about being a Templar is nothing is really off the table. If someone needs help, and we’re in a position to offer that help, we do.”
